Hello Winter

We’ve had a mild winter until now….and this week we celebrated an entire week off school. We were pelted with 7-8 inches of snow, then 2 days later gave us 2 inches more…followed by record breaking low temperatures. Today it is about 3 degrees, and the windchill is 16 below 0.

Lyla: “This is the coldest it’s been in my whole life."

The crazy weather has been good, and it’s been bad. It is Thursday, and we are all feeling the effects of cabin fever. Lyla and Cade are at each other’s throats, and I was up last night with Cade through much of the night. He was diagnosed with an ear infection this morning.

Lance & I have laughed about the difference between snow in childhood and adulthood - we roll our eyes at digging out the driveway 2 times in 3 days, getting to the hospital on snowy roads in the middle of the night, and entertaining the kids for days on end…indoors.

But, snow is magical in childhood - there’s no doubt about that. Here are a few photos to prove it:

Our first snow started in the middle of the night and dragged on through the entirety of the next day. It literally snowed all day long. Lyla was excited to get out in it and play - Cade, not so much. He says it stings his eyes. I’m wondering now if he’s been dealing with an ear infection he didn’t know how to tell me about. We did manage to get him out there some so hopefully he’ll start developing some positive snow associations soon.

Cade spent the snow time in the basement, although 5 minutes before we came in, he did say, “Maybe I should have gone out…” Given the fact that it takes longer to get the 2 of them ready than the amount of time they actually spend outside, I was relieved this was a fleeting thought.

That evening, (Super) Daddy insisted on taking the kids out again for an evening sledding adventure. I’m so glad he did - I will admit that I shed a private tear to myself feeling so overwhelmed with joy that my children have a Daddy who works on his feet in a crazy ER all day and comes home and WANTS to take his kids out after dinner…despite that it was cold, that it would take forever to get ready. Blessed beyond measure.

2 Days later we were blessed with a new smattering of snowflakes - this time we played with Eli. This snowstorm has given Lyla a new understanding of the joy of sledding - she doesn’t ever want to go inside now, and Eli is exactly the same way. Again, blessed beyond measure to have such wonderful friends just a few steps away:
